"As I work, I attend so closely to the face of the painting in front of me that I lose sight of the boundries between me and it. When I see something that I have done to it, it is like a clue to further things I must do - It amplifies my attention. Trains of thought and feeling are set in motion which I have to complete, or at least explore, and the impulse to do so is such that I cannot distinguish between what is interior to me and what is out there on the canvas."
Helen Frankenthaler
